GET AWAY...AND LOOK YOUNGER!!

Some Hotels Now Offer Cosmetic Procedures

The hospitality industry is constantly evolving and hotels these days are going to extraordinary lengths to draw in more customers. Though the idea of a spa and a hotel mesh nicely, cosmetic surgery and hotels don’t traditionally go together. However, recently, guests at the Four Seasons Hotel in Austin, Texas have been able to take advantage of a new, gimmicky draw: cosmetic surgeries and procedures. The idea of a spa and a hotel was just taken a step further.

RELATED:

Everyone in the United States considers the possibility of plastic and cosmetic procedures. Some people desire dramatic changes like breast augmentation or rhinoplasty while other people are more apt to go for small, natural-looking alterations like Botox or a chemical peel. The Four Seasons in Austin is starting off with some less hard-core cosmetic procedures to whet their customer’s palettes. In the near future, however, plastic surgery procedures like breast augmentation and liposuction will become a reality as well. By offering cosmetic procedures in a hotel setting, individuals who aren’t willing to go through the effort to set up an initial consultation and do the complicated footwork required to bring a surgical cosmetic procedure to fruition can take a more laid-back approach to the process. Rather than having to seek out a dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon, the intersection can take place via serendipity. Patients can decide to have surgery more impulsively and come back from their vacation as an entirely different (looking) person.
Cosmetic surgery patients prefer to look at their procedures as opportunities to luxuriate, rather than medical procedures. By placing the procedures in a hotel rather than a hospital or medical facility, patients can approach the situation more like a vacation and less like a medical situation. In the case of the Four Seasons hotel (which also has longer-term residential rooms available), even getting a breast enhancement performed can be somewhat relaxing and rejuvenating for patients. Currently, patients can check in to the hotel and then get Botox, skin tightening, or a chemical peel performed by Westlake Dermatology.
Westlake Dermatology of Austin will be providing the state-of-the-art procedures at the Four Seasons along with expertise and a strong sense of how to promote wellness in their patients. The hotel hopes to draw in customers from around the world as well as residents of the local community. Though cosmetic surgery on the ground floor of a hotel may be a new idea, hotels and cosmetic surgeons have been working together for a long time offering special discounted offers to their guests.
The Westlake Dermatology clinic and the Four Seasons hotel are committed to their partnership and currently share the same Facebook page. Customers looking for a deal can find a special tweeting offer for the first 100 customers who sign up for a Botox treatment at the hotel. As other hotels try to compete for customers, there may be some strange alliances formed, but the idea of cosmetic surgery and the hospitality industry seems to make sense and is probably here to stay.

Social Media Makes Plastic Surgery Decision Making Simpler

Social Media Makes Plastic Surgery Decision Making Simpler

Businesses all around the globe are trying to figure out how best to make use of social networking to further their financial goals and enhance customer service. Though social media has definitely found its niche, businesses are still struggling to figure out how to use it best. In the medical sector, this hasn’t been easy. The special legalities of doing business as a medical practitioner create convoluted questions about what’s okay and what’s not in social media. But nonetheless, doctors are starting to make an appearance on Facebook and Twitter, trying to see what works and what doesn’t.
As doctors experiment more and more with social media, there are several themes emerging that seem to provide some direction to doctors who are trying to decide whether or not to try social media for their clinic. Patients are able to get questions answered via Facebook, for example, and surgeons are able to market some of the latest surgical procedures to their existing clients. Surgeons who use social media are able to better inform their patients and make sure they receive detailed information about the procedures they’ve signed up for. This is important given that many patients feel as though their questions weren’t answered by their physician prior to surgery or they didn’t receive all the information they needed to feel fully comfortable with the procedure.
The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery recently released survey results demonstrating that 42% of patients have received information about facial plastic surgeries from online social networking web sites. Doctors have mixed feelings about these results. Some doctors realize that social media could help enhance patient communications and patient care, while others feel that the topic of plastic surgery is not appropriate for social networking sites. According to this view, patients should not be making decisions off of information gleaned from a resource as unreliable as Facebook.
Social media has opened up a whole new dialogue between doctors and patients, which has, for the most part, been positive for both sides. Open communication and feedback can be helpful for quality improvement and to encourage a better relationship between a doctor and his or her patients. And prospective patients can get a feel for a particular clinic by simply joining the online community and seeing what the buzz is about. If the buzz is mostly negative, prospective patients can find a different surgeon.
Though the social media market is still evolving and plastic surgeons are still trying to find their place in the web, plastic surgery patients have definitely found benefit from using social media as a tool because it provides much-needed education in an informal and yet personal setting. And plastic surgeons are able to learn more about the patients they serve, which can help them make important changes to serve them even better. Though the profits directly attributable to social media so far have not been remarkable, indirect marketing could be substantial. As patients find it easier to develop a relationship with their doctor via social networking, word-of-mouth marketing may increase demonstrating a  more obvious connection between profits and social networking.

FINDING HOPE AFTER MASTECTOMY

Women without Insurance Less Likely to Get Breast Reconstruction after Mastectomy
At the 2011 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium in December of 2011, some interesting information regarding women’s responses to breast cancer were presented with some surprising results. Despite the fact that women benefit in a number of ways from having breast reconstructive procedures performed following the removal of the breast (mastectomy) due to breast cancer, only a small minority of breast cancer survivors go through with the procedures.
Currently, only about a third of the women having mastectomies today are taking the extra step to have breast reconstruction performed, according to Dawn Hershman, M.D. of Columbia University Medical Center in New York. Given the well-known psychological benefits conferred by breast reconstructive surgery, one would think the number of women having the procedure performed following mastectomy would be much higher. Women who have undergone mastectomies and have subsequent breast reconstructive surgery have an improved quality of life, according to research. Women feel better about their body and self-esteem is considerably higher when women opt not to delay having breast reconstruction performed, but rather go ahead with it right away.
The study presented at the San Antonio symposium included 106,988 participants who were identified by insurance codes. These women were then analyzed based on the frequency with which they sought out reconstructive surgery, the type of insurance they carried, and a number of other important variables such as race and age. In the study, only 22.6 percent of the women undergoing mastectomy sought out immediate breast reconstruction. One of the biggest factors the seemed to play a role in the decision to have a mastectomy had to do with health insurance, according to the other variables that were analyzed in the study. Women who went ahead and underwent immediate breast reconstructive surgery were much more likely to have health insurance than women who did not.
Women with commercial insurance have been the ones to most frequently seek out breast reconstruction immediately following a mastectomy, particularly women in under-50 age group. Among women who underwent a mastectomy at less than 50 years of age, 67.5 percent went ahead with breast reconstructive surgery. In other words, women who had commercial insurance were three times more likely to go ahead and have the plastic surgery procedure than women who didn’t have health insurance in place to cover the procedure.
Overall, there has been an increase in the number of women who have breast reconstructive surgery immediately following a mastectomy but the numbers are still really low. Among women who are younger than 50 years old, only 41.8 percent get the surgery done right away. The numbers are even lower for women over age 50. Less than 20 percent of women in this age bracket do the procedure right away. Researchers have asserted that public policy needs to be in place to provide immediate reconstructive options to post-mastectomy patients. Women who have gone through the ordeal of having breast cancer and a full mastectomy should have access to breast reconstructive surgery regardless of whether they have insurance or not.
